Pleasantview Effect

We had to use the effect of isolating a colour. It needs to be a bright colour and one that isn't anywhere else in shot.

We achieved this by putting a 3 way colour correction on the video clip, then eye dropping the colour of the thing we wanted (like the shoes), the inverting the colours, unticking the sat and luma boxes and putting the saturation down.

Cloning

Our task was to make a video with our 'clone' using final cut pro to create the illusion.

To make it seem real we have to make sure the camera doesn't move otherwise the frames will be different. We used a tripod to keep it steady. We then have to make sure the lighting is the same. We just used a normal light to do this. To keep the illusion the two people need to have the same eye line. And lastly bodies cannot cross and neither can shadows, we used a line in the background to guide us.

Editing it is quite easy, first you have to put the clips together and then make the top one transparent. This means you can edit it to make it in time. Then after trimming the clip you can crop it left or right to then be able to see the person underneath.

With mine at one point my arm went over the line so it was cropped out so next time I'll be more careful.

Music Video Idea - Task 3

I want my music video to have a narrative because I think this makes a video interesting.

The storyline of the video is two halves of the same person represented at 2 people. This is quite easy to do you can either split the screen to show two people of just film in different places but make it look like there are 2 people there.

They then become friends and they want to be one person because together they are complete. Person A is confident but quite arrogant, and person B is kind but really shy. They then find a book on how to become one person. They build the machine and find the necessary ingredients and at the end they become 1.

I want the video to have an amateur look to it. I think it looks cool when it does and it's also achievable in the short space of time we have. Here's an example of something looking amateur.

I was inspired by these videos for the idea of 2 people becoming one. I didn't really have any ideas before this so I can't show how I've got to this idea.

I want to use this song for my video because I think the lyrics "I belong with you, you belong with me" could be shown by 2 people needing each other without it being a love story (which I want to avoid).

I was originally going to have the whole video narrative but I think I might have a bit of performance in there as well because I don't think the story will be able to fill the song.

I think it would be easier not split the screen and to just film the 2 people separately but give the illusion that they are together.

To fully put this music video in production you would need a camera and props (like the machine) and also different filming locations.

I have some other ideas for other songs but I want to go with this idea because I think it's unique, matches the song and is also touching on the theme of friendship which is something most people don't really do.

Music Video History - Task 1 & 2

Music videos have been around since the 1960's, although these were only performance videos it still gave the music a feel to it as you could see the band members and what they were wearing and how they were acting. The first 'real' music video which was directed and edited was bohemian rhapsody by queen.

Music videos are there to advertise the song and the artist. Their soul purpose is promotion but it also represents the song. They do this through different types of music videos.

The different types of music videos are narrative (storyline), performance, or abstract.

Examples of this

Storyline:

This shows the story of a person having two different types of days, a happy day and a sad day, but then in the end the sad day is still happy. This reflects the song as it's a happy upbeat song.

Performance:

This shows the band performing but not on a stage it looks more like a warehouse which in some ways shows them breaking from conventions. They also have a twist because loads of green liquid spills over them which wouldn't usually happen in a performance video.
Abstract:

This video just shows lots of colourful random stuff. It's quite childlike (having a teddy bear and ballet dancer) but it also somewhat relates to the lyrics as there's a money tree and car.

Different genres of music have different music videos as it represents their music. So pop tends to be colourful and happy and the music is, they also have lots of people dancing as people listen to pop to dance and sing.

In this video they show a party (so people dancing and having fun) but also everyone is wearing different outfits which are really colourful and bright. This is almost like a parallel universe because it's like normal life but the colours are more vivid and brighter. It's like the audience is escaping real life by watching this video.

This video is slightly more realistic but some things are more colourful than in real life like the grass.

Other genres like indie and rock tend to have more performance based music as it's more about the lyrics then being able to dance to it. Although they can have storyline based music videos as it could relate to the lyrics. It tends to not be colourful and it usually sticks to dark colours.

Having a good music video is important because it reflects on the song. If the music video is bad then when it comes up on a music channel people won't stay tuned.

A conventional music video whether it's narrative or clips, will most likely show a person signing the song, no matter what the genre is.

These two songs are completely different in genre and style but still they show a person singing the song.

In a music video they tend to have lots of short clips rather than one long shot. This is because it usually keeps in time with the music and it keeps the video upbeat and energetic. If a music video is all one shot and slow people will get bored.

Although this is a slow song so the music video is slow it's still boring.

In my opinion a music video has to be fast, have a storyline and be different from other music videos to be interesting. This music video is like no other, it has a weird storyline and is fast paced. And for those reasons it's my favourite music video. It has loads of action in it but not so much it diverts from the song.

Setting up a Bin 16.2.2

We need to set up a bin so we can keep our clips organised. There are 3 ways to set up a bin in final cut pro

The first is to right click where the clips are and select New Bin.

The second way is to select file, new, bin.

And the third is simply to click cmd + B on the keyboard.

When you make a new bin it'll appear like this.

You can rename the bin.
To put folders into the bin you can drag them into the bin.
