The 26th Day Scene 4

THE 26TH DAY

The four are back inside, Josh and Brydie are splattered in blood and all of them are staring into space looking slightly traumatised

Brydie (to Josh)
Hey you've got something on your face

Josh glares at Brydie

Brydie
Okay clearly not a good time for jokes, anyway I'm gonna wash my face n stuff

Brydie goes out the room

Thomas
Hey Josh

Josh
What?

Thomas
Thanks for saving me

Josh (making a reference to their argument before)
If I knew were gonna be such a prick I wouldn't have bothered

Thomas
Aha... yeah sorry about that, I didn't mean it

Josh
It's fine, and I guess I'm sorry too, you know it's hard being stuck in here all day

Thomas
Yeah, so we're cool?

Josh
Yeah

Thomas
Hey Isabel you alright?

Isabel
Yeah

Thomas
Really you look kinda pale are you sure?

Isabel
I just feel a bit sick that's all

Josh
Maybe it was from seeing the zombie getting hacked to death?

Isabel
mmm

Thomas
oh yeah thanks for trying to save me too, I honestly thought I was gonna get bitten!

Josh
What did Isabel do?

Thomas
She tried to push him off me

Josh
Really? (to Isabel) How did you not get bitten?

Isabel
I guess it was concentrating on Thomas or something

Brydie comes back from the bathroom looking concerned

Brydie
Who's been bleeding?

Thomas and Josh
What?

Brydie
There's a bunch of tissues in the toilet all covered in blood, and it wasn't me

Josh
It wasn't me

Thomas
Same

Everyone looks at Isabel, she looks up at everyone staring at her then runs into the bathroom, locking herself in.

The 26th Day - Scene 3

EXT.                    THE 26th DAY

The four stand outside, opposite the person who they think is dead and infected. Josh is first to approach the man.

Josh
Oi someone pass us a stick

Thomas finds a stick and hands it to Josh from a distance.

Brydie
So you're just gonna poke it?

Josh
Yeah

Josh approaches the man but before he goes to poke it he steps back

Josh
I dunno maybe I should throw something at it first, just in case

Thomas
I agree, I think there's stones over there

Isabel
But what if it is alive? Then it's just cruel

Josh
Shut up Isabel, it's infected anyway so it basically is dead. And when did you start having an opinion

Isabel
What do you mean?

Josh
You've barely said anything for days now, sulking away in the corner, we're getting sick of your attention seeking now so you can cut it out

Isabel looks hurt from what Josh has said and is trying to find words to come back with, but then Brydie steps in

Brydie
Josh shut up Isabel has been through a lot, we all have, just leave her

Josh
Tell someone who cares

Thomas
I've got stones...are we still gonna throw them..?

Josh snatches the stones from Thomas' hand

Josh
Of course we are

Josh leans back as he throws a stone at the person. Isabel winces as he's doing so. Nothing happens. Josh looks around the group and they all shrug, so he throws some more.

Josh
Guess it's dead then

Josh reaches for the stick from earlier and proceeds to poke the poke.

Josh
Aha it's definitely dead look!

Josh repeatedly pokes the person

Isabel
Stop!

Josh
Why this is fun!

Isabel
It's alive okay!

Thomas
How do you know?

Isabel hesitates to answer

Isabel
I..don't know

Brydie
C'mon let's go back inside

Josh is still poking the person, then kicks it. Josh starts laughing but then the person slowly turns over to face Josh. Josh steps back in disbelief. The others have already started to walk away before this has happened.

Josh
Guys...

Brydie
What now?

Josh
I think it's alive

The others quickly turn to face the person. The person is moving slowly and grabs the ground to get up

Thomas
Okay everyone stay calm, we need to go back inside, lock the doors again and we'll be safe

Thomas says talking slowly and calmly but is clearly scared.

Josh suddenly runs to the other side of the garden, making everyone jump. The person, who is still moving relatively slowly,  is now on his feet, but is staying still.

Brydie
Josh no!

Thomas
What are you doing we need to get iside!

Josh is banging on the shed door to try and break it open, but it's not budging. The person is now walking towards the group. Brydie and Isabel stay back but Thomas, who is watching the shed doesn't notice and the person pulls him to the ground. The person is trying to bite Thomas but he keeps it's head at an arms length, but is clearly struggling.

Thomas
Help me!

Brydie
Just hold on!

Brydie runs to the shed where Josh is and together they bash the door.

Thomas
Hurry up!

Brydie and Josh continue to bash the door but still nothing happens. Thomas looks like he's going to give up but at one last push he looks to Isabel

Thomas
Isabel do something!

Isabel runs over to Thomas' aid, but still the person is trying to bite him. Isabel tries to push the person off but nothing happens.Josh and Brydie finally break down the shed door and scramble iside to get tools.  Thomas' arm which was holding up the person, stopping it from biting him, bends and the person is about to bite him.

Isabel
No stop!!

The person immediately stops and it's head slowly turns to look at Isabel. Thomas takes this opportunity to push the person off him and quickly steps back from it. Isabel is still looking at the person. Josh and Brydie, now armed with garden tools run to the person and turn him over, so his head is facing the ground.

Josh
Now?

Brydie
Now!

They both start bashing the person with the garden tools. After a few moments they stop and look at the thing they just killed. Thomas and Isabel are looking distressed.

Brydie

So I guess it wasn't dead

The 26th Day - Scene 2

INT.                    THE 26TH DAY

After the first scene some time has passed, but it is clearly the same day.
The group are in the same room all hanging about. They seem bored. Thomas is by the window and is looking out of it, clearly distracted from reading his book. Isabel is sitting alone and Josh and Brydie are sitting near each other.

Josh
I'm bored

Brydie
We're all bored

Josh
How long's it been now?

Brydie
Err, I think they said 26 days

Josh
Jheeze really? It feels longer

Brydie
I know, we haven't been out in weeks.

Josh
*noticing Isabel alone in the corner* She's acting weird, what's up with her?

Brydie
Well she hasn't seen her family in ages, we're having to ration our food and we've been stuck in the same stupid room for what feels like a billion days, maybe that's what's bugging her

Josh
Yeah well we're all in the same situation and you don't see me sulking about it

Brydie
Look just leave her, it's hard for all us but we just take it in different ways

Josh
Whatever

Thomas is looking out of the window when he sees something in the bush. He then realises it's a zombie lying on the floor.

Thomas
Hey don't panic

Brydie
Why what's happened?

Josh
Have we ran out of beans?

Brydie nudges him

Thomas
I think there's a person out there

Josh
Ah let's see!

Josh rushes to the window and pulls back the curtains and cardboard, causing light to pour in. The group squint at the sight of it.

Isabel
What's happening?

Josh
There's a zombie out there

Thomas
Don't use that word!

Brydie
I think it's dead

Thomas
I don't know

Thomas walks away from the window

Thomas
Guys we have to go, I don't think it's safe to stay here

Brydie
You serious?

Josh
Don't be such a drama queen. We just need to check if it's dead that's all

Thomas
Oh yeah and how are we gonna do that?

Josh
We can poke it or something? I don't mind going outside

Brydie
For once I think Josh may be right. How you gonna do it?

Josh
I'll just get a stick from outside and give it a nudge, and if it don't move then the zombie is obviously dead

Brydie
They're not zombies they're people with cerebrum Mortius Syndrome

Josh
Yeah, or zombies. Anyway I'll go out on my own I don't need anyone with me

Brydie
No we'll all go, because if one of us gets hurt then we're all in danger

Thomas
We're not going outside!!

Thomas' sudden outburst shocks the group and usually he's calm and content.

Josh
Wowa calm down man, if you don't wanna go that's fine, we all know you're a bit, well you know

Thomas
A bit what?

Josh
A bit of a coward

Thomas
Oh I'm the coward? I'm the one who rescued you when you were nearly bitten and everyone abandoned you. If I knew you were such a prick I wouldn't of bothered.

Josh pushes Thomas and they start pushing each other, Brydie intervenes

Brydie
Guys stop! It's us verses them if we start fighting we might as well give up!

Thomas and Josh calm down but don't apologise.

Brydie
Now are we going outside?

Josh
I think we should

Brydie - to Isabel-
Isabel?

Isabel
What?

Brydie
Do you think we should go out?

Isabel
Er yeah sure

Brydie
Cool, Thomas?

Thomas
Yeah fine

Brydie
Okay good

The 26th Day - Scene 1

INT.                       THE 26TH DAY

The bathroom

Isabel is distressed.
She is rushing around in the bathroom.
There are tissues covered in blood which she is disposing.
After tidying up the bathroom she frantically washes her hands and face. After a deep breath and drying off her face she looks at herself in the mirror and walks out into the main room.

When she walks out into the main room her three friends, Josh, Thomas and Brydie are watching a news report.

Josh
Where've you been Issy they're doing a broadcast it's kinda important

Josh gets shushed by everyone in the room and Isabel joins the others to watch it

-News Report-

It has now been 26 days and a state of emergency is in operation throughout the United Kingdom.
This is a broadcast from the British Armed Forces through the Communication Relay at Emerald Communication Services. We advise you to be smart and be safe. The pandemic of Celebrum Mortius has already affected over 750,000 people and still is infecting a growing number of survivors.

Until further notice, observations have been noted that once infected, an individual cannot be reasoned with. If you believe someone’s been infected, do not approach them – they’re classified as highly dangerous and prone to having: discoloration, fever, vomiting, loss of muscle coordination, paralysis in the lower body, overall numbness and slowed heart rate. We urge you to do not touch them or let them touch you. If you believe you have been in contact with an infected, advanced medical help is
*cut out - flatline*

Brydie
Well that was reassuring

Josh (imitating Brydie)
Well that was reassuring

Brydie
Oh my god you're so annoying

Josh again imitates her

Thomas
C'mon guys this is not time to be arguing! (Turning to Isabel) You alright?

Josh and Brydie continue to argue in the background

Isabel
Yeah I'm fine

Thomas
Good!

Story Board for Ident

We're gonna use the song "plucky daisy" by Kevin Macleod and some park noise.

We aim to use one frame 3 times per second

Mind Map

We were torn between the two ideas but in the end we decided to go with claymation as we felt it would be more suitable for the ident.

The idea is for different people made out of plastacine to be doing different things, like reading and taking photos. Then the camera will zoom out and we see that they're playing over the CWC logo.

I think this is perfect for the ident as you'll see the logo, it's short and is interesting to watch.

Channel Idents 2.0

This is an ident from E4. It's an animation and doesn't have a storyline it's just abstract. E4 is predominantly for young people so having this ident reflects the channel brand because it's not too series. Young people tend to have a lot of school work and studying to do so E4 don't want to be teaching anything to their audience or acting like a parent they want to be like a friend to the viewers. This ident accurately represents the channel because in it everything is being released and is free moving and I guess when young people are watching E4 they feel like they're being freed from school work.

This ident is from ITV3. ITV3 tends to show re runs of older shows, mostly detective shows, like Poirot. This is another animation but it has a different feel then to the E4 one. It's a ball set in the olden days and I think it gives a representation of the channel because the channel mostly shows re runs and costume dramas. So the ball is relating to the fact they show classic shows rather than new ones. It's also quite slow paced which again reflects the channel, the channel is aimed for older people so having it slow paced suits the audience. People watch ITV3 for calmness and nostalgia and I think the ident represents that because it's slow paced, it's not too action filled and it's set in the past, which is what the channel is all about.

Idents are not only there for the announcer but as I said before, they're there to give the viewer a feel to what the channel is about. It's important they are distinctive from each other because every channel is unique and they need to show that. If all idents were the same then people could stop listening the announcer and even switch over to another channel, as nowadays there is a lot of choice.

A good ident can intrigue a viewer, which makes them stay on the channel. I myself am guilty of watching an ident and then just staying on the channel. If the ident is creative, interesting and creative the viewer will think the entire channel is like that, again an ident represents the channel, so the more interesting the ident is, the more interesting it makes the channel seem.

When making an ident you have to:

  • Make sure there is no text or voices in the ident, as it will distract from the announcer
  • Don't make it too interesting so the viewer won't listen, but don't make it too boring that they'll switch over
  • Don't include anything offensive as that's not a good representation for the channel.

Channel Idents

Idents are all around 20 seconds long, the first 10 seconds are interesting and involve a lot of action but then the second half is less interesting but still has some movements. This is because this is when the announcer is talking so they don't want the viewer to be distracted by the picture on the screen, nor do they want them to be bored.

No idents contain people speaking, this is due to the fact that the announcer will be speaking, so if there's speaking in the ident it will confuse the viewer.

Idents contain the channel name. This is to inform the viewer what channel they are watching. The ident matches the theme of the logo. BBC1 is round like the O in one. BBC3 is pink and the ident is very pink as well. And ITV is yellow and so is the sand on the beach.

Channel idents are there for several reasons. The main, I would say, is to have time for the announcer to tell the viewer what show is up next, what is on later when the next episode in the series is on. This makes the audience stay on the channel rather then browse other channels. This wasn't always the case though, before 1998 there was only 5 main channels, (BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5). But in 1998 Sky was introduced, which meant people were getting a lot more choice, so channels have to make an effort to make the viewer stay on the channel.

In my examples, all three of them have an announcer. BBC Three is more casual as the channel is primarily for young people, this gives the channel a more friendly face and is more of a friend type channel rather than it being a parent to the teenagers it tries to stay on the same level as them.

ITV seems quite formal, the announcer simply says what needs to be said there's no jokes or anything. But she has a friendly voice and the actual image is quite comedic, you have people being disturbed by wind and a persons skirt going up, which doesn't really match the tone of the announcer but I think it's their way of not keeping the channel to formal.

BBC1 again seems quite friendly. The voice over has a friendly tone and the yellow colouring makes it seem homely.

Idents are also there to remind the viewer or people who have just tuned it what the channel is. All three idents have the logo featured in their ident. This is just there to confirm what channel it is.

Idents also give a visual representation of what the channel is about. BBC Three again is for young people so the ident is quite "random" and quirky. ITV shows a family and I think a lot of programs they show is for families. The BBC1 ident is interesting to look at but it's not overly crazy which shows how they show just normal programs.

Morph - Claymation

We had to create a character using plasticine. We had to roll a ball then stretch out a head, arms and legs. Then add eyes and a mouth. You have to make sure it's stable and won't fall apart when animating.

We then had to make an animation with the model. We did a film about 2 characters fighting over a phone, then a scary guy comes out and scares them away, only to steal the phone for himself.

It was hard to animate as you have to make small movements, and I think if we had more time ours could have looked really smooth but we didn't, but overall I really like it and the characters looked really good.

I think the claymation has a simple but strong storyline. Also the fact it's weird characters that don't exist, it's set in the real world and has a real phone so it brings it to reality. We were influenced by Morph to do this because they have real pencils and other objects in their world and I wanted that in our one too because I think it makes it seem more real.

Morph is an Aardman creation. Aardman Animations was founded in 1972 and revolutionised animation. They are famously known for their plasticine models being animated. I think the reason they are so successful is the fact that the figures look so good. They look friendly and the audience knows it's plasticine, but it's like it comes alive and that's why they like it. When anything has a human like feel to it, like teddy bears and toys, there's always a thought in people's minds that's it secretly alive. And I think Aardman is confirming their suspicions but in a creative and funny way.

Compared to other animations we have done this has been slightly easier. With cutout animation there is limited movement and you don't get a character that you have made entirely yourself it's from bits of magazines, so it may not be exactly what you wanted. And of course it's 2D so again there's a limit on what you can achieve.

Pixalation animation involves more restrictions. Using an actual person to do it means there's limited things you can do, like flying and turning into other objects etc. And a person can't stay 100% still in between shots so it may not look smooth in post production. But using a person means it seems more real and when you do do something which is out of the ordinary it makes the animation seem more surreal and therefore more enjoyable.

With claymation I find there's not a lot of restrictions. You can create your own character, who is 3D and make them move however you wish. You obviously have to make sure the model is steady and can stand on it's own feet, a problem we discovered during shooting, but other than that it's pretty simple. The good thing with plasticine is that you can mold it in to anything, and since animation tends to be set in another world this is very useful.
