Introduction to Editing
The Gloaming
1) What is editing?
Selecting different shots you've collected to tell a story
2) What is elliptical editing?
It allows the viewer to fill in the gaps to save time (eg. showing a person falling asleep and then waking up without showing them sleeping)
3) Why are long shots used?
To show where the scene is set.
4) What is 'non diagetic' sound?
A sound added in after editing, the viewer can hear it but the actors at the time couldn't
5) How do we know she is bending down to pick up the ring? (what shots are used and why?)
Because she looks down (close up)
We see the ring on the floor (close up)
Then we see her hand pick up the ring
Then we see her standing up again with the ring (medium close up)
And the viewer can put these scenes together to see what is going on.
The Hustle
1) Over head establishing shot - what does this achieve?
It shows the characters in the scene, their positioning and where the scene is set.
2) What is shot-reverse-shot?
It shows the conversation between people3) What is eye-line matching?
It's matching up the eye line of people in different shots so we know who they're talking/looking at.4) Why does it cut to other members of the group
To show their reaction to what he is saying plus to keep the scene interesting5) What is a wipe?
A slick transition6) What is the effect of using quick cuts?
To keep the viewer on their toes and to make the scene appear faster.
The Invisible Art
1) How can editing build tension and pace?
The quicker you flick between shots it makes the scene feel faster, to build tension you can play with how long the shot is.2) What is crosscutting?
Showing the same place but using different angles and shots3) What are reaction shots?
Shots used to see how people are reacting to something that is happening around them4) What is seamless editing?
It's when the viewer isn't paying attention to the editing and how it's being put together.5) What is a jump cut?
It's a deliberate cut which the viewer is aware of6) What is a flash back and what does it achieve?
A flash back is showing what happened in the pass but from the present day, it is used to show a back story.7) How can editing be used poetically?
It can show two scenes next to each other and the viewer has to make the connection. So one will be a normal scene and the other a metaphor.
Watch ‘Playing with Time’ – watch the film ‘The Gloaming’. Write a short evaluation of the editing used in this film. Refer to detailed examples from the film and use the terminology you have learnt today.
At first they use music to show the mood of it, so a non-diagelic sound. Then in the short film they use a flashback straight away, so at first we think it's a happy film but in reality it's not, this keeps the viewers on their toes. The lighting is brighter in the happier parts (on the motorbike).
They have used seamless editing to make the film seem more real. In this film there is a lot of elliptical editing which I think is good because it makes the film shorter. They show the woman looking around the caravan but they don't show her walking around in it they just show her playing with new things which shows the viewer she's never been there before.
The shot they did in the caravan when she finds the skull was quite long which builded up the tension. When she's confused and looking around the forest they used a lot of shots but they were all short in length which makes the viewer also feel confused.
Read the Film editor job profile. Then, summarise in your own words the key aspects of being an editor. Explain what other people the editor works with and the skills needed.
Editors have to make sure the clips put together make sense and show what the storyline is. Not only that but they have to make sure the film grabs the attention from the viewers and they can change the mood of the film by music and lighting so they have to make it right.
They have to work closely with the directer to see how the film is suppose to be, this is a lot of pressure because they have to do it how the directer wants it.
Editors must know how to use a computer and know how to use editing software, not only do they need to know how to do it they need to know how to edit effectively.
They also need to see if there are any errors in the film which is hard because they'll be watching the clip over and over so it's hard to point out mistakes.
